The route

Dakar to Gorée to Banjul to Mindelo to Praia to Saint-Louis. Times can change with the weather; the captain always chooses the calmer water.

Fly from Abuja or Lagos the day before; a host meets you at arrivals. Board in Dakar from 2pm and sail past the African Renaissance hill at dusk.

A short ferry and a long, quiet morning on the island of memory, with its museum and the Door of No Return. Afternoon at sea.

  3. Day 3: at sea

A slow sea day: a talk from our guest historian, the spa, and dinner at Kola.

  4. Day 4: Banjul ashore

Up the Gambia river mouth to the capital: the Albert market, a boat into the mangroves and birdlife you will not forget.

  5. Day 5: at sea

At sea all day. Cooking class with the chef in the morning, highlife in the Atlantic Lounge at night.

  6. Day 6: Mindelo ashore

Cape Verde's music town. Colourful squares, a fish market and an evening of morna in a small club near the harbour.

  7. Day 7: Praia ashore

The old town on the plateau, the village of Cidade Velha and the first church in the region, with lunch overlooking the bay.

  9. Day 9: at sea

A last day at sea, with a farewell dinner and the crew singing on deck.

  10. Day 10: Saint-Louis ashore

Tender to the old island city on the Senegal river: painted balconies, horse carts and the long Faidherbe bridge.

  11. Day 11: Dakar home
