Ibadan this week

Hot afternoons, light rain on Thursday. Pack cotton, not fleece, and a muslin for the walk from the car park.

Lead story · Getting ready

Everything for the last eight weeks, in one bag.

Bring your ward's list. We tick it line by line, pack it in front of you and tell you what you can leave at home.

Cradle & Co opened in 2017 as one shelf of baby clothes in a corner shop off Agodi Gate. Today it is a two-floor store with a fitting room for maternity wear, a nursery corner where you can try a cot rail with your own hands and a packing table where we put hospital bags together while you wait.

We still work the way we started. Every family gets a person, not a queue. We know the lists the big Ibadan wards hand out, we keep the items they ask for in stock and we tell you honestly when something on a list is not needed. If it is cheaper at the market, we will say so.

Most of what we sell is chosen for the weather here: breathable cotton, muslin, fans that run through a power cut and mosquito nets that zip all round. Prices are in naira, with layaway on the big things.

Five things to tick tonight

The full checklist has about thirty items for mum, baby and the person driving you. These five are the ones people most often forget. Tick them here, then open the full list: it remembers your ticks on this phone and adds up what is left to buy.

They packed my whole hospital bag while I sat with a cold drink. The ward list from my clinic was ticked line by line.

The cot arrived in Bodija the next morning and they assembled it. My husband was very grateful.

I paid the stroller off in four parts. Nobody rushed me and it was ready when I needed it.

Opinion

Buy less in newborn size than you think

Most babies leave newborn size within four to six weeks. Buy four of each item in newborn and put the rest of your budget into 0 to 3 months and 3 to 6 months. You will thank yourself in January.

"Two good wrappers beat ten cute outfits."
Visit

Two floors off Agodi Gate, with parking at the back

The ground floor is clothing, feeding and bath. Upstairs is sleep, prams, the fitting room and the packing table. A ramp at the side door means you can bring a pram or a wheelchair straight in.

Pay by transfer, POS or cash. Inside Ibadan we deliver the next day from ₦2,000, and big items are assembled at home.
